Zhineng directly translates to "Wisdom Abilities" and Qigong refers to energy work or practice. Everything is made of energy or qi, from our physical world and bodies to our thoughts, emotions, and human concepts. While modern science has been slow to recognize the subtle forms of energy that shape our lives, indigenous cultures and esoteric religions worldwide have long utilized these invisible energy fields for healing and optimizing life.

Dr. Pang Ming began teaching what he called Zhineng Qigong in the early 1980's, at a time when traditional healing modalities in China were making their way to the west. Dr. Pang is both a traditional medical doctor and qigong master who devoted his early life to studying ancient Chinese texts on energy healing techniques. He introduced Zhineng Qigong as a simple practice tailored for healing in modern society. Unlike other qigong methods, Zhineng Qigong uses relatively simple movements and specific consciousness practices that emphasize internal awareness over physical perfection. This is a highly somatic practice where emotions and physical sensations are important clues to what needs healing and acceptance. Students learn to connect together in coherent collective consciousness fields and in this way, find that the healing of one leads to the healing of all. This type of consciousness-based collective healing practice has the potential to heal all aspects of existence from the ground up.

Starting in the 1980's, Dr. Pang applied the principles of Zhineng Qigong to healing chronic and incurable diseases at the remarkable "Medicine-less Qigong Hospital", where 5,000 people practiced daily and experienced profound recoveries. Dr. Pang applied a scientific approach to the healing methods at the Medicine-less Hospital and documented a success-rate of 95%. Although political pressure in China forced Dr. Pang's retirement and the hospital's closure in the early 2000's, his students continue to teach worldwide.

Zhineng Qigong is not a religion or spiritual tradition in itself but provides a powerful framework for understanding the esoteric aspects of spiritual traditions. Students learn the fundamental principles of energy and consciousness science and are then invited to "see for themselves." The intention is that students develop the capacity to have a direct experience of how consciousness shapes reality, intention directs energy, and collective fields amplify individual transformation.​​ In this way, Zhineng Qigong serves as a meta-framework—a scientific approach to exploring subtile energy that offers a unifying perspective and a door to self gnosis and understanding.
